Education Department & Resource Center

Keokuk Area Hospital works closely with the communities we serve. We offer a variety of education and wellness programs to help you take an active role in your health care.

The KAH Education Department is available to provide or assist with, the educational needs of the Keokuk Area Hospital staff, physicians, administration, Board of Trustees, patients and community. Our goal is to assist health care personnel to maintain and improve competency in practice by providing appropriate education activities. Additionally, we strive to serve as a resource to patients and their families in order to assist them in acquiring or maintaining knowledge and a state of wellness.

Resource Center

  • Available to Keokuk Health Systems employees and associates
  • Open to the public during normal operating hours
  • Maintains a full service Health Science Library including Inter Library Loan services, and Medline access
  • Internet access available to all patrons

Community Programs

  • Prenatal Classes - to prepare expectant parents for the childbirth experience
  • Prenatal Update Classes - for parents who have delivered in the last five years
  • I'm Important Too - prepares siblings for the new arrival
  • Breast-feeding Class
  • CPR Training
  • Lifeline - an emergency response system designed for the handicapped and elderly persons who live alone. At the touch of a button, emergency personnel respond 24 hours a day, every day
  • TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf) - hearing impaired persons with TDD units may communicate with KAH 24 hours a day by phoning 319-524-6792
  • Speaker's Bureau - professional speakers to visit your organization free of charge to speak on a variety of topics
  • Explorer Post - allows students ages 14 to 21 to explore hospital careers
  • Senior Health Insurance Information Program - trained volunteer insurance counselors are available
  • Medical library services

Keokuk Area Hospital Scholarships

The following scholarships and loan programs are available through Keokuk Area Hospital. Applications can be picked up in the Human Resource Department at KAH and are to be returned by April 1st, to the appropriate location.

Virginia Thomas Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is open to employees who have been employed at KAH for at least one year and have been accepted in a health career program. The number of scholarships and the dollar amounts will be determined by the scholarship committee based on the funds available and upon applicant needs. There is an interview process and applications must be returned to the Human Resource Department.

KAH Auxiliary Scholarship

The Auxiliary Scholarship is available to anyone pursuing a RN through the A.D.N. program at Southeastern Community College. This scholarship cannot be used for prep classes. There is an interview process and applications must be returned to the Human Resource Department.

Bea Ambery Loan Program

This loan is available to employees and members of the community who are pursuing their RN through the A.D.N. program at Southeastern Community College and for interested persons pursuing careers in Laboratory or Radiology. The loan repayment will start 6 months after graduation. Applications must be submitted to Pat Henson, RN, CNE, for consideration.

The Raymond and Hilda Balzer Nursing Scholarship

The Raymond and Hilda Balzer Nursing Scholarship applications are available to qualified applicants enrolled in an accredited professional nursing program that confers and Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Applicants must be accepted into their nursing program at the college of their choice to be considered for the scholarship.
